sit-in

Protest by remaining seated

A sit-in is a form of protest where demonstrators occupy a place and refuse to leave until demands are addressed.

The tactic gained prominence during the American civil rights movement, when Black protesters sat at segregated lunch counters: The Greensboro sit-ins helped desegregate Southern businesses.

Sit-ins have since been used in labor disputes, antiwar movements, and campus protests.

The strategy forces confrontation through peaceful but disruptive presence.
