paceline

Riders sharing wind

A paceline is a formation in cycling where riders travel in a close single-file line, each drafting behind the one ahead to reduce wind resistance.

Riders rotate positions, taking turns at the front where effort is greatest, then dropping back to recover.

We formed a tight paceline and averaged thirty miles per hour.

The term extends to similar formations in speed skating and running.
