low fantasy

Mundane world magic

Low fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy fiction set primarily in the real world or a world resembling it, with magic and supernatural elements as intrusions rather than foundations.

Unlike high fantasy's invented realms with elaborate magical systems, low fantasy keeps the extraordinary rare, ambiguous, or unsettling: The story was low fantasy—just a cursed object disrupting an otherwise ordinary town.

The "low" refers to the reduced presence of fantastical elements, not to quality or ambition.
