second officer
Bridge crew member
Second officer is a rank on merchant ships, typically third in command after the captain and first officer (chief mate).
The second officer usually handles navigation, maintains charts, and often stands the midnight-to-4 a.m. watch: The second officer plotted our course through the strait.
On aircraft, the term occasionally appears for the third pilot or flight engineer.
