third mate
Fourth-ranking deck officer
A third mate is a deck officer on a merchant ship, ranking below the captain, first mate, and second mate.
The third mate typically stands navigational watches, maintains safety equipment including lifeboats and firefighting gear, and assists with cargo operations.
On smaller vessels the position may not exist, while on larger ships additional junior mates may serve beneath the third mate.
She worked her way up from third mate to captain over fifteen years.
