Confederate States
Southern breakaway government
The Confederate States, or Confederate States of America, was the government formed by eleven Southern states that seceded from the United States in 1860–61, precipitating the American Civil War.
The Confederacy fought to preserve slavery and state sovereignty, surrendering in 1865.
My great-great-grandfather fought for the Confederate States.
Confederate remains politically charged, appearing in debates over monuments and flags.
