nullification
Making something void
Nullification is the act of making something legally void or ineffective.
A court may order the nullification of a contract.
Historically, nullification refers to the doctrine that U.S. states could refuse to enforce federal laws they deemed unconstitutional—a position that contributed to the Civil War and is now rejected.
More generally, to nullify is to cancel or negate: His later actions nullified any goodwill he'd earned.
