Dixie

Below Mason-Dixon line

Dixie is an informal name for the southern United States, especially the states that formed the Confederacy.

The term evokes Southern culture, identity, and nostalgia, though it carries different connotations depending on context—romantic regionalism to some, associations with slavery and segregation to others.

Whistling Dixie means engaging in unrealistic or wishful thinking.

The 1859 minstrel song "Dixie" popularized the term. (Lowercase dixie is a cooking pot.)
