Dixiecrats

Segregationist party members

Dixiecrats were members of a breakaway faction of Southern Democrats who opposed civil rights reforms in the mid-twentieth century.

The States' Rights Democratic Party formed in 1948 when Southern delegates bolted from the Democratic National Convention over its civil rights platform, nominating Strom Thurmond for president.

The term blends Dixie (the South) with Democrats, and now labels any Southern politician clinging to segregationist or racially conservative positions: The old Dixiecrats eventually migrated to the Republican Party.
