Vienna Secession

Austrian art revolt

The Vienna Secession was an art movement founded in 1897 when a group of Austrian artists broke away from the conservative Vienna Artists' Association.

Led by Gustav Klimt, the Secessionists rejected academic art traditions in favor of newer styles and international influences, embracing Art Nouveau and what would become early modernism.

Their motto was "To every age its art, to art its freedom." The movement's distinctive exhibition building, with its golden dome of laurel leaves, remains a Vienna landmark.
