edge case
Unusual input situation
An edge case is a situation occurring at the extreme boundaries of normal operation, where standard assumptions may break down.
In software testing, edge cases probe what happens at limits—empty inputs, maximum values, unexpected formats: The code crashed on an edge case we hadn't considered.
More broadly, any unusual scenario that tests the limits of a rule or system: That's an edge case; the policy wasn't designed for situations like yours.
