Painted religious shrine
A retablo is a devotional painting, typically on a small wooden panel or tin sheet, depicting saints, Christ, or the Virgin Mary.
The tradition is strongest in Spanish and Latin American folk art, where retablos often commemorate answered prayers or miracles: The church walls were covered with retablos thanking the Virgin for healings.
Larger retablos may be elaborate altarpieces behind church altars.
