ex-voto

Shrine thank-you gift

An ex-voto is an offering made in fulfillment of a vow or in gratitude for answered prayer.

These objects—paintings, plaques, crutches, silver hearts—are left at shrines or churches to thank a saint or deity for healing or protection: The chapel walls were covered with ex-votos from grateful pilgrims.

The term comes from Latin meaning "from a vow."
