time-out

Benched for misbehavior

Time-out is a pause in activity.

In sports, teams call time-outs to stop the clock and strategize: The coach called a time-out with ten seconds left.

For children, a time-out is a disciplinary measure—brief isolation to calm down or reflect on misbehavior: Go sit in time-out until you can use your words.

In computing, a time-out occurs when a system stops waiting for a response: The connection timed out.

The verb form is usually two words: The session will time out after fifteen minutes of inactivity.
