rest in peace
Graveyard memorial phrase
Rest in peace is a conventional expression wishing the dead a peaceful afterlife, often appearing on gravestones and in obituaries.
The Latin equivalent *requiescat in pace* gives the abbreviation RIP.
The phrase appears in condolences and memorials: Rest in peace, Grandma.
Online, RIP has become casual shorthand for anything that has ended or failed: RIP my phone—dropped it in the toilet.
