fermata
Notation for lingering
A fermata is a musical notation indicating that a note or rest should be held longer than its written value, at the performer's or conductor's discretion.
The symbol is a dot beneath an arc, resembling a small eye.
In ensemble playing, musicians watch for the conductor's cue to release a fermata.
The term comes from Italian for "stop" or "pause."
