reinforced concrete
Metal-embedded building material
Reinforced concrete is concrete strengthened by embedded steel bars or mesh.
Plain concrete handles compression well but cracks under tension; the steel reinforcement absorbs tensile stress, allowing the material to span greater distances and bear heavier loads.
Most modern buildings, bridges, and infrastructure use reinforced concrete: The parking garage was built of reinforced concrete.
