tower blocks
Vertical residential buildings
Tower blocks are tall residential buildings containing many apartments, typically built as public housing.
The term is primarily British, corresponding to American "high-rise" or "housing project." Tower blocks dominated postwar urban planning but became associated with social problems and poor living conditions: The council demolished the old tower blocks to build low-rise housing.
