adobe

Earthen building blocks

Adobe is sun-dried brick made from clay mixed with straw or other organic material, used for building in arid climates.

The term extends to structures built with such bricks: an adobe house, adobe walls.

The material has been used for thousands of years in the American Southwest, Mexico, and the Middle East, where the dry climate prevents the unbaked bricks from dissolving. (Capitalized Adobe is the software company.)
