prestressed

Tension built in

Prestressed describes concrete or other structural materials that have been strengthened by applying internal compression before use.

Steel cables or rods are tensioned within the concrete, counteracting the tension forces that would otherwise cause cracking under load: prestressed concrete beams, a prestressed bridge deck.

The technique allows for longer spans and thinner sections than conventional reinforced concrete.
