shuttering

Protective window boards

Shuttering is the present participle of shutter, used both for the act of closing shutters and, more significantly, for closing down a business or operation permanently or temporarily.

The company announced the shuttering of three manufacturing plants.

In construction, particularly in British usage, shuttering refers to the temporary wooden or metal framework into which concrete is poured to set, also called formwork.

The term suggests finality when applied to closures—businesses that are shuttered aren't just closed for the day.
