brutalism
Uncompromising harsh approach
Brutalism is an architectural style characterized by massive concrete structures with raw, unfinished surfaces and bold geometric forms.
The name comes from the French for raw concrete, not from brutality, though the imposing aesthetic often feels brutal.
Popular from the 1950s through 1970s for public buildings, it remains divisive: The university's brutalist library is either an eyesore or a masterpiece, depending on who you ask.
The term sometimes extends to blunt, unadorned approaches in other fields.
