cob
Maize ear's central cylinder
Cob collects several unrelated meanings.
The most familiar is the central core of an ear of corn, the part that remains after the kernels are removed: corn on the cob.
A cob is also a stocky, short-legged horse, or a male swan.
In building, cob refers to a mixture of clay, straw, and water used to construct walls, an ancient technique still practiced today.
A cobnut is a type of hazelnut, sometimes shortened to cob.
