seawalls

Shore erosion blockers

Seawalls are barriers built along coastlines to protect against erosion and flooding from waves and storm surges.

They're typically made of concrete, stone, or steel and run parallel to the shore.

Unlike breakwaters, which sit offshore, seawalls directly armor the land: The seawall held during the hurricane, but the beach behind it had long since washed away.
