endpaper

Cover's inner lining

Endpapers are the sheets of paper at the front and back of a hardcover book, one half pasted to the inside of the cover, the other half forming the first or last leaf.

They reinforce the binding and provide a transition between cover and text block.

Endpapers are often decorative—marbled, colored, or printed with maps or patterns: The vintage atlas had beautiful marbled endpapers.
