pufferfishes
Toxic inflating swimmers
Pufferfishes are a family of fish that can inflate their bodies by swallowing water or air, becoming round and spiny to deter predators.
Many species contain tetrodotoxin, a potent poison.
In Japan, specially licensed chefs prepare pufferfish (fugu) as a delicacy, carefully removing toxic organs.
Also called blowfish.
