mollusks

Snails and clams

Mollusks are invertebrate animals with soft bodies, typically protected by a hard shell.

The phylum includes an enormous range of creatures: snails, clams, oysters, mussels, octopuses, and squid.

Some mollusks, like oysters and mussels, are prized as food; others, like the giant squid, inhabit ocean depths and rarely encounter humans.

The spelling mollusk is standard in American English, while mollusc prevails in British English.
