swim bladder

Piscine buoyancy organ

A swim bladder is a gas-filled sac inside most bony fish that controls buoyancy.

By adjusting the amount of gas, the fish can rise, sink, or hover at a particular depth without expending energy swimming.

Also called an air bladder.

The fish's swim bladder had ruptured, leaving it unable to stay upright.
