punting

Kicking the football

Punting is kicking a ball before it hits the ground, especially in American football when a team surrenders possession by kicking downfield: They were forced to punt on fourth down.

In British English, punting means propelling a flat-bottomed boat with a long pole, popular on rivers in Oxford and Cambridge.

To punt also means to defer or avoid a decision: Let's punt on that question until next week.
