pledging

Making a commitment

Pledging is the act of making a formal commitment or promise.

Students pledge allegiance; donors pledge money to causes.

In fraternities and sororities, pledging is the trial period before full membership, when new recruits undergo initiation: Pledging was the most exhausting semester of my college life.

To pledge assets is to offer them as security for a loan.
