graduations

Cap and gown events

Graduations are the marks or lines indicating measurement on an instrument—the small divisions on a ruler, thermometer, or measuring cup.

The word also refers to ceremonies marking completion of an academic program: She attended three graduations this spring.

More abstractly, graduations can mean gradual stages or degrees of change: subtle graduations of color in the sunset.
