neophyte

Just beginning here

A neophyte is someone new to a subject, skill, or belief system—a beginner or novice.

The word often appears in religious contexts for recent converts, but applies broadly: As a neophyte in the kitchen, she burned everything.

It carries slightly more formality than "beginner" and suggests someone still learning the basics.
