reclaiming
Retrieving what's yours
Reclaiming is the act of taking back something lost, abandoned, or degraded.
You reclaim luggage at the airport, reclaim land from the sea, or reclaim materials for recycling.
A community might reclaim a neglected park.
In social contexts, reclaiming often means reappropriating a slur or stereotype, turning an insult into a badge of identity: The queer community has been reclaiming that word for decades.
