probation

Conditional freedom period

Probation is a period of testing or trial during which someone must prove themselves.

In criminal justice, it's a sentence that allows an offender to remain in the community under supervision instead of serving time in prison: He was given two years' probation for the theft.

In employment and education, probation is a trial period during which performance is monitored and continued participation depends on meeting certain standards: New hires are on probation for ninety days.
