amount

The whole sum

Amount is a quantity of something, especially something uncountable: a small amount of sugar, the amount of time we have.

Purists insist amount applies only to mass nouns while number applies to countable things, but a large amount of people is common in speech.

As a verb, to amount to something is to add up to it or be equivalent: The changes amount to a complete overhaul.
