caisson

Watertight construction chamber

A caisson is a watertight chamber used in construction work underwater or in wet soil—workers enter to excavate foundations for bridges, tunnels, or piers while the water is kept out by compressed air.

The word also refers to a large ammunition chest or the horse-drawn wagon that carries one, famously in military funerals: The caisson bore the flag-draped coffin.
