piece of eight

Old pirate currency

A piece of eight was a Spanish silver coin worth eight reales, widely used as currency throughout the Americas and Europe from the 16th through 19th centuries.

The coin could be physically cut into eight wedge-shaped pieces for smaller transactions—the origin of the term "two bits" for a quarter.

The phrase now evokes pirate treasure and colonial-era commerce: The chest was filled with pieces of eight.
