Spanish dollar

Colonial silver currency

The Spanish dollar was a silver coin minted by the Spanish Empire from the late 15th through the 19th century, widely used in international trade and accepted as legal tender across the Americas, Asia, and Europe.

Also called the piece of eight because it could be divided into eight reales, it became a de facto world currency and directly influenced the creation of the U.S. dollar.

The Spanish dollar circulated freely in the American colonies.
