quetzal

Iridescent Central American

A quetzal is a brilliantly colored bird of Central American cloud forests, with iridescent green plumage and, in males, dramatically long tail feathers.

The resplendent quetzal was sacred to the Maya and Aztecs.

Quetzal is also the basic monetary unit of Guatemala, named after the bird: The exchange rate was eight quetzals to the dollar.
