thaler
Old German currency
A thaler was a large silver coin used across German-speaking Europe from the 16th century onward, becoming a standard unit of currency.
The word gave English its word *dollar*—when American colonists needed a name for their new currency, they adapted the familiar thaler.
The merchant accepted thalers from several German states.
