cross-hatching

Intersecting parallel strokes

Cross-hatching is a shading technique using sets of parallel lines drawn at angles to each other.

The more layers of lines that intersect, the darker the area appears.

Artists use it in drawing, engraving, and printmaking to create tone and depth without solid fills: The etching's shadows were built up through careful cross-hatching.

The verb is cross-hatch.
