color separation
Cyan, magenta, yellow, black
Color separation is the process of dividing a full-color image into its component colors for printing.
Traditional four-color printing separates an image into cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK), each printed from its own plate.
Screen printing and other processes may require separating into spot colors.
The term also applies to the films or digital files produced: The printer needs the color separations by Friday.
