phosphors

Light-emitting screen coatings

Phosphors are substances that emit light when excited by radiation.

They coat the inside of fluorescent tubes and older television screens, converting invisible energy into visible glow.

The term comes from the Greek for "light-bearer." A phosphor's color depends on its chemical composition—different phosphors produce the distinct red, green, and blue dots that combined to form images on cathode-ray screens.
