tracer
Luminous ammunition round
A tracer is something that traces—follows, marks, or makes visible.
In military use, a tracer is a bullet or shell that leaves a visible trail of light or smoke, allowing the shooter to see its path: Tracer fire lit up the night sky.
In medicine and science, a tracer is a substance (often radioactive) introduced into a system to track movement or processes: Doctors used a radioactive tracer to monitor blood flow.
A tracer can also be an inquiry sent to locate missing mail or shipments.
