electron spin

Intrinsic angular momentum

Electron spin is a quantum mechanical property of electrons, an intrinsic angular momentum that exists independent of any actual rotation.

Despite the name, electrons don't spin like tops—the term is a metaphor for a property that has no classical equivalent.

Spin comes in two states, often called "up" and "down," which determine how electrons pair in atomic orbitals and underlie magnetic properties of materials.
