erbium

Rare earth metal

Erbium is a metallic element of the rare earth series, atomic number 68, symbol Er.

It appears in specialized applications: erbium-doped fiber amplifiers boost signals in fiber optic communications, and erbium lasers are used in dermatology and dentistry.

Like other rare earths, it was named after Ytterby, a Swedish village where the mineral containing it was discovered.
