air gap

Void between surfaces

An air gap is a physical separation between two systems that prevents direct connection, especially in computing where a computer isolated from networks is said to be air-gapped: The classified system maintains an air gap from the internet.

The term also describes literal gaps filled with air rather than solid material, as in electrical insulation or building construction.
