sidekick

Hero's trusted companion

A sidekick is a close companion who accompanies and assists someone, typically playing a secondary or supporting role.

The term originated in American slang and is now most associated with fictional partnerships where a hero has a loyal but less prominent partner: Batman and his sidekick Robin.

In everyday use, sidekick can affectionately describe a friend who's always around: My dog is my constant sidekick on morning runs.
