BitTorrent

Distributed file transfer

BitTorrent is a protocol for sharing files over the internet by distributing the transfer load across many users simultaneously.

Instead of downloading from a single source, you download pieces from multiple peers who already have the file, while uploading pieces you've received to others.

The system works best when files are popular—more users means faster downloads.

BitTorrent became synonymous with piracy but has legitimate uses for distributing large files like software updates and game patches.

I'm torrenting the new Linux distribution.
