chum

Buddy or bait

Chum has two distinct origins in English.

One chum is a close friend or companion, probably from chamber-fellow (a roommate): We've been chums since college.

The verb means to be friendly or hang out: chumming around with the neighbors.

The adjective chummy describes warm friendliness, sometimes with a hint of excessive familiarity.

The other chum is chopped fish and other matter thrown into water to attract fish.

To chum is to scatter such bait: chumming for sharks.
